Country Hospitals
Sir, —The reply of the Minister of Health to your correspondent, A. B. Anderson, indicates that either the Minister has been misinformed or he has not done his “homework.” The position at Cheviot has not been resolved, and the hospital is still short of one full-time trained sister Fortunately, the Cheviot Hos pital enjoys full support from the district and the number of babies born to Cheviot residents away from the local hospital is only one or two a year. Mr McKay must know this situation is not uncommon in country hospitals, as shown by the number of staff vacancies in Canterbury alone, and bears little relationship to the bed occupancy. If the Government is unable to arrive at a rapid and satisfactory solution it appears the time is not far distant when all maternity services will be centralised and the country hospital and doctor a thing of the past.—Yours, etC '’ BRIAN HEYWARD. Cheviot, July 18, 1966.
