All the 770 prisoners and 140 prison staff at Stafford Gaol are being vaccinated after the discovery that a woman suffering from smallpox visited a prisoner there last week. The woman was admitted to a Salford, Lancashire, hospital yesterday suffering from suspected chickenpox. Her illness was today confirmed as smallpox. The medical officer for Staffordshire, Dr. G. Ramage, said no extra precautions were being taken in the city. A Home Office spokesman said most of the prisoners had been vaccinated, and the ro mainder would be done this afternoon.
