WOOL WAX COMPONENT
Fellowship For Study
Mr J. Bartley, of Auckland, has been appointed to a fellowship in lanosterol chemistry which has been established at the University of Auckland by the Wool Research Organisation. Lanosterol forms a large component of wool wax and is fairly similar in molecular structure to a number of hormones of commercial importance. The director of the Wool Research Organisation (Mr N. F. Roberts) said that Mr Bartley, who was the holder of a master of science degree, would be working at Auckland under Professor L. H. Briggs, of the chemistry department, investigating the chemistry of the transformation of lanosterol, especially by fungi. Mr Roberts said that fungi were able to effect precise chemical changes that were difficult to achieve by conventional means. It was hoped that it might be possible to obtain a commercial hormone. By conventional chemical treatments this might be obtained only at much greater expense.
