SNOWBOUND GENERAL
N.Z. Departure Delayed The Secretary-General of S.E.A.T.O. (LieutenantGeneral Jesus Vargas) was prevented from leaving New Zealand for Australia on Sunday evening because his party was snowbound in the Hermitage area. A Qantas Boeing had to leave without General Vargas, who later caught a National Airways Corporation flight to Auckland. Yesterday he left there in an Air New Zealand DCS. While officials in Christchurch made alternative travel arrangements, the Government car bringing the general’s party to Christchurch was stuck in snow on the road from the Hermitage to Lake Pukaki. The vehicle took three hours to cover the 15 miles. The most delighted person in the party was Mrs Rosalina Vargas. It was the first time she had been so Close to snow.
