House Gutted

(N.Z. Press Association' AUCKLAND, July 15. A fire which gutted a house In Birkdale, near Auckland, tonight is believed to have been caused by a short circuit in an electric blanket. Two brothers, Mr B. P. Kirby and Mr J. E. Kirby, were sitting in the kitchen of the house at 31 Fordham street, when the fire began. Mr J. E. Kirby said: "I had put on the electric blanket earlier. When I went into the bedroom I saw a flame a foot high coming from the bed.” Mr Kirby ran next door to telephone the fire brigade. By the time he got back the house was burning and it was impossible to get inside. The Kirbys lost all their possessions.
