FREE LICENCE FORDRIVER Traffic Officer To Mark Retirement After 21 years with the Transport Department in Christchurch, a traffic officer, Mr C. S. Hansen, will retire today. To mark the occasion he will give a five-year licence to the person who passes the last driver’s test under his supervision. At 65 Mr Hansen is one of the oldest serving members of the department He joined the Christchurch Tramway Board In 1926. and drove trams and trolley buses for 10 years before becoming a traffic inspector with the Waitare Borough Council. During the Second World War Mr Hansen served in the armed forces and was a member of the Royal New Zealand Air Force band. The transport work of the Waitara Borough Council was taken over by the Transport Department during the war. Soon after he returned to his duties in Waitara, Mr Hansen was transferred to Christchurch where he has remained ever since. A life member and current president of the Skellerup Woolston Band, he has been associated with brass bands for more than 50 years. Mr Hansen has won seven New Zealand double bass titles, and has been runner-up 13 or 14 times.
