AUCKLAND, July 14. Customs officers face an almost impossible task policing the new regulations forbidding travellers to take more than £5 in New Zealand currency in or out of the country. The assistant-Collector of Customs at Auckland, Mr J. O'Connor, said today that the only way concealed currency could be found was by search—and such searches were made only rarely. “It is always up to the officer on the spot to decide to make a search,” he said. “He may do so if he has reason to suspect that an Individual is
carrying excess money—usually from information received. We do not make these searches very frequently, however.”
Mr O’Connor said there had always been a restriction on the amount of cash taken from the the country. The new limit brought down In the 1966 Budget, was £lO lower for travellers to Britain and £2 for people going to other countries. The restriction on money coming in was new. "We do not very often find people trying to take additional money out of New Zealand,” he said.
