Frustrations “There are minor frustrations, of course (in living in Christchurch), such as searching for the newspaper in the undergrowth on a dark, dull winter’s morning,” said the United Kingdom Trade Commissioner in the South Island (Mr P. C. Burdett), at an informal farewell given to him last evening by the council of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association. Another rather frustrating or cold recollection, he said, was louvres in lavatories. “Unfortunately, mine is on a more southerly aspect,” he said. Cold Day Cloud and a south-west wind kept the temperature low in Christchurch yesterday. After a light frost at Harewood the temperature there rose to 45 degrees by noon, and remained constant for much of the afternoon. At 3 p.m. the temperature at the Botanic Gardens was 47 degrees, and at 4.30 p.m. the temperature gauge on the Government Life building showed 48 degrees. Operation 21 About 12 members of the lona Presbyterian Church Bible class group recently contributed £5 7s 3d towards Operation 21 projects. The children raised most of the money by washing cars at a charge of 5s each. They also held a record evening. The money was handed to the district organiser of C.0.R.5.0. (Mr G. H. Coley), by the minister of the lona Church (the Rev. J. S. Scarlett). Daffodil Day The Christchurch Free Kindergarten Association will hold its annual Daffodil Day appeal on September 23. Mrs D. M. Shepard, secretary of the association, said there would also be a stall in Cathedral square on the same day. Leander Reunion A reunion of the South Island branch of the ExLeander’s Association will be held at H.M.N.Z.S. Pegasus tomorrow. About 100 former members of the ship’s company have been invited, and at least 50 are expected to attend. A former sub-lienten-ant in the Leander, Captain R. T. Hale, the present Deputy-Chief of Naval Staff, will address the reunion. The main reunion will be held in Auckland. The South Island branch was formed about two years ago by the commanding officer of the Canterbury division of the Royal New Zealand Naval Volunteer Reserve (Commander R. F. Sanderson) who also served in the Leander. Second Turtle The second live turtle found on the 90 Mile beach recently was captured near Matapia Island on Wednesday afternoon. It is a green turtle, 165½ pounds in weight, 44 inches long and 28 inches across. The turtle may be flown to the Napier Aquarium, home of the turtle found a fortnight ago. The discoverer of the turtle is Mr J. Tepania, whose small son Ben found a sea snake recently on the same beach.
