reluctant heroes who fought in France, Scotland, Ireland, Spain and the Netherlands. Often it appears incredible that they “were able to fight at all, their numbers reduced by corrupt padding of muster rolls, their food bad or unobtainable, with poor equipment, little training, and leaders who aimed at personal gain rather than military efficiency. In its revised form it could appeal to a much wider audience than the professional historians.
