ENGLAND S JOY SHORTLIVED

(N.Z.P.A. Reuter —Copyright) NOTTINGHAM. Any elation England felt after dismissing the West Indies for 235 when the third test began at Trent Bridge yesterday vanished quickly as it lost three wickets with only 13 runs scored.

At the close, M. C. Cowdrey and T. W. Graveney had taken the score to 33 for three to complete an enthralling day's cricket. There did not seem to be any particular life in the pitch to explain 13 wickets falling on the first day of a test. The fast bowlers were able to move the ball about in the atmosphere but the majority of deliveries came off the turf in orthodox fashion. The West Indies batted unevenly, P. Lashley and G. S. Sobers being dismissed in the same over by J. S. Snow. S. M. Nurse batted with aggression and made 93, with 11 fours, and Lashley contributed a useful 49. Accurate Bowling K. Higgs and Snow bowled accurately and they were well supported by B. D’Oliveira’s medium pace off-cutters. After three men went for 80, Nurse and Lashley added 60 before Snow took his two wickets with the first and last balls of his first over after rejoining the attack. But if the West Indies batsmen disappointed England’s failures were disastrous. G. Boycott was l.b.w. to the second ball of the innings 'from Sobers, and then W. W. 'Hall had C. Milbum caught 'at second slip and uprooted W. E. Russell’s stumps. Both Graveney and Cow-

drey had to utilise all their experience to thwart a further break-through as Sobers juggled his attack cleverly. WEST INDIES First Innings
