Appeal Total Now £3776

More than £3776 has been received in Christchurch for the John Harrison Memorial Fund, in response to the national appeal to assist Mr Harrison’s wife and two infant children.

A letter from Jimmy Baker, on behalf of the Standard Four class at Tauranga South School, arrived at “The Press” yesterday. It read:

“Before Captain Scott perished in Antarctica he wrote, ‘For God’s sake look after our people.’ When Mr John Harrison died at Otira last week he didn’t have time to make such an appeal. So shouldn’t we help his family just as we are helping the Kaitawa dependents? “We have discussed this in class and our teacher says that South Island people are generous and will do what is needed, but we think that John Harrison was a very noble hero and that all New Zealanders should be able to share in the privilege of helping his wife and children.

“We enclose ten shillings. Will you please pass it on?”

This donation was among others amounting to £694, received by “The Press” yesterday. The money will be forwarded today to the trustees, who will issue receipts. The trustees are Sir Edmund Hillary, president of the New Zealand Alpine Club; Mr N. D. Hardie, a friend of Mr Harrison; Mr Robin Harrison, the dead man’s brother; Mr G. T.
