About this time each year Southland trainers move north with their teams. The exodus began last week. By the end of this week the teams of D. V. and R. F. Pankhurst, from Invercargill, .members of W. J. Hillis’s Riverton stable and the Gore trainers, R. J. Cochrane and E. A. Winsloe, will be preparing their teams for winter racing in North Otago dr South Canterbury. The Pankhurst team—already quartered at Oamaru —comprises Lorastan, Earl Howe, Captain Howe, the two-year-olds Capasco and Chango, a half-brother to the Riccar-ton-trained Mogambo, and a yearling colt, by Ruddington, purchased at the National Sales at Trentham in January. R. J. Cochrane brought Game Call, Ranana and Queenscliff north to Waimate last Friday. They will be joined later this week by Anouk, Full Course, Gladaub and two unraced youngsters. Members of the Hillis and Winsloe teams will arrive at Washdyke this week.

The preparation of the jumpers, Ipstan Light and Helena Maid, which together with Natram and Mosque will represent the Hillis stable on the South Canterbury circuit next month, will be supervised by J. O’Meara. Bush Creek and Flisk will not be included in the Hillis team at Washdyke. They will go to Riccarton later to join Koral, Macdonald, Eiffel Tower and Turtle, which Hillis is at present campaigning in the North Island. Summer Magic, one of the Dominion’s top three-year-olds earlier this season, will be the star member of the team Winsloe will bring north. This Summertime colt, which has been in work for some time, after an enforced spell because of injury, is an acceptor for the Donald Grant Memorial at Washdyke on Saturday. The other members of Winsloe’s team to be prepared at Washdyke are John’s Mistake, which has been entered for the major steeplechases at Trentham, Tidal Rip, Lyndabelle, Sum General, Baalbek and Etassem.
