Drivers To Press For £3 Rise

Zealand Press Association! DUNEDIN, June 27. The Otago Drivers’ Union, at a stop-work meeting in Dunedin today, overwhelmingly voted in favour of pressing employers for a £'3-a-week rise.

Of about 400 union members at the meeting only four voted against the motion. The secretary, Mr W. M. Kellett, said recent negotiations with the employers had been unsatisfactory. Instead of an extra £3 on the weekly basic wage, the employers had offered only 15s. “This would bring the basic wage to £l5 a week, which no married man can live on nowadays,” said Mr Kellett.

“It is more than 20 per cent behind the. the cost of living today.” Mr Kellett urged union members “not to rely on such things as overtime and bonuses because they can be taken away from you tomorrow.”

It was essential that men should be paid adequately fori

working no more than a 40! hour week, Mr Kellett said. : Negotiations with the employers wilT reopen in Wellington on July 19.
