Equals Best Time

(N.Z. Press Association) DUNEDIN. R. V. Johnson, the hurdler in the New Zealand team for the Jamaica Empire Games, was second in the 440 yards hurdles in the National Collegiate Athletic Association's championships on Saturday. Johnson ran the excellent time of 51sec for his placing, compared with the winning time of 50,4 sec put up by R. Steele (Michigan State University). The 51sec equalled Johnson’s best time for the season made when he won the Western Universities hurdles title last month. Earlier this month he ran 51.2 sec. A. G. Pyne, a Canterbury athlete also studying at the University of California (Los Angeles), finished second in the six miles and fourth in the three miles in the N.C.A.A. championships. Pyne’s time in the six miles, held on Thursday, was 28min 20.1 sec. The threemile race was held on Saturday. A decision on Pyne’s selection for the Games team has been deferred to June 30.
