PRODUCTION OF TOBACCO
More N.Z. Leaf Used New Zealand’s consumption of cigarettes was 5.021 b. a head of population in the year ended June, 1965, according to the Government Statistician (Mr J. V. T. Baker). The corresponding figure for the previous twelve months was 5.631 b. Releases of tobacco of all kinds from bond formed the basis for the consumption figures. Mr Baker said the figures for the year ended June, 1964 were increased through heavy withdrawl from bond in the pre-Budget month of June, 1964. This resulted in a below-average withdrawl in July, 1964, part of the 1964-65 year.
Fewer cigarettes and less tobacco were produced in New Zealand in the production year 1964-65. More New Zealand-grown tobacco leaf was used, however. The output of cigarettes declined from 3948 m in 1963-64 to 3887 m in 1964-65, and tobacco production dropped from 4,633,0001 b to 4,084,0001 b. Of the total tobacco leaf used, 5' per cent was New Zealand-grown, five years earlier, in 1960-61, only 39 per cent was New Zealandgrown.
