N.Z. PEACE COUNCIL

Nuclear Talks

Supported The New Zealand Peace Council decided at its annual conference to support the call of China and France for s' world conference of heads of governments for the banning of all nuclear weapons and the destruction of stockpiles. A resolution adopted by the conference reaffirmed the council's view that the threat of nuclear war remained as long as nuclear weapons existed.

In another resolution, the conference called on the Government to withdraw New Zealand’s troops from Vietnam, and said that the main threat to world peace sprang from the aggressive policies of the United States and in particular its war against the people of Vietnam. A third resolution called on the Government to recognise China and establish normal relations with it

The conference paid tribute to the work of Professor W. T. G. Airey for many years as chairman of the executive of the council and a member of the World Council of Peace. Officers elected were.—President, the Very Rev. C. W. Chandler; executive chairman, Mr J. Eastwick; secretary, Mrs F. Gould; vice-presi-dents, the Rev. D. G. Sherson, Messrs C. Homer, H. G. Slingsby, F. Tercel, H. W. Youren, and Mrs H. M. Parry.
