RACING KUMAI COULD WIN AT OAMARU

Burnside Steeplechase Today

Members of the versatile Kurdistan tribe should win both jumping races at the Oamaru Jockey Club’s winter meeting todav.

Kurdistan has Kumai to represent him in the steeplechase and Startler and Lorastan running for him in the Hack Hurdles.

A second runner for the i imported Southland-based I sire in the steeplechase is Anouk. Superior Pace Kumai probably will be a dominating favourate for the Burnside Steeplechase. His superior pace should carry him through if it is allied with reasonably competent jumping. Startler and Lorastan have been recent winners for! Southland owners over i hurdles. They should be fair- i ly evenly matched for speed I

1 and should shade the others : in that respect in the Hack . Hurdles, the first leg of the I on-course double. Startler won at Riccarton at Easter, then recorded two fourths on soft tracks in s Southland. Loraston outclassed a . weak field at Waimate before ! a second behind Pahi at > Wingatui. Solid Form After two wins at the Dun- • 1 edin winter meeting Mystery • Cloud probably will be favII onrite for the Awamoa Hack

Handicap, the second leg of the on-course double. But a favourite’s victory would be by no means certain if Shoelace and El Beka ran up to their best form. Shoelace easily beat a stronger field than this at Riccarton at Easter. El Beka is speedy, and would have fashioned a better

record by now if he had been I completely sound. The combined efforts of ! Hawkins, Sandbank, Tsu--1 nami and perhaps Dark ; Chick, should make a Canter- . bury victory safe in the Waikaura Hack Handicap. Hawkins, winner of two of his last three races, is running out hack nominations and is top-weight with 9-1, 31b

above the consistent Sandbank, which has been runnerup in his last three races. A top-weight’s T.A.B. double for Tundra and Sabell would be no surprise today. But it would not surprise either if Sabell went under to another Riccarton sprinter, Dark Seaman, in the second leg, the Grange Handicap. Dark Seaman’s last-start third in the Amberley Cup, won by Tumble, looks highly promising as a form guide for another seven-furlong test today.
