Apartheid
Sir, —In your editorial “No Abridgment of Freedom,” you state that “the South African Government must have been incensed by Mr Kennedy’s fortbrightness in condemning apartheid.” Is this surprising in view of the fact that the South African considers apartheid necessary to progress and prosperity? Apartheid in ranging degrees is practised in every country in the world; but South Africa is in a unique position in that its white people are vastly outnumbered by the black. In joining the popular “let’s hate-South-Africa" campaigners, Mr Kennedy is doing clever political work to further his own ambitions. Theodore Roosevelt was noted for his big game hunting prowess, and it was said that he was happiest in the moment before the lion charged. Mr Kennedy is evidently happiest making “fine speeches.” It is no wonder he “cut no ice” with the rugged Boers. — Yours, etc., D. VICARS. June 20 1966.
