Wingatui Horses For Melbourne
Six Wingatui-trained horses were flown from Christchurch Airport yesterday morning in the South Island’s first major airlift of gallopers going to Australia.
Royal Estate, BeHition, Bastille, Ski, Jock and Mon Amour were Melbournebound in the care of the Wingatui trainer, A. E. Didham. The departure was delayed by one day and members of the team were at Riccarton on Saturday morning. On this, his third trip to Australia since the Second World War, Didham has made no definite plans about the duration of his stay at
Mentone in Melbourne. Most members of his team are at their best as winter performers, but in Royal Estate, the South Island could have a prospect for one of the rich spring cups. Royal Estate struck a brilliant patch of form in the autumn for his Ranfurly owner, Mrs H. G. McLeod, to win the George Adams and Great Autumn Handicaps at Riccarton following a win at Oamaru.
