Black Tulip Wins Again

Black Tulip, a winner at Nelson a week earlier, gained another impressive win in the Waikuku Handicap at Rangiora on Saturday.

She was awkwardly placed five or six places back on the inside with most of the field in front of her racing to the straight. The leaders moved out and A Johnson sent her through a wide gap. She was in- charge half a furlong out and came on to win handily by a length and a half. Black Tulip is a three-year-old filly by the Light Brigade

horse, Masterpiece, from Van Brabant, a daughter of Van Dienian. She was bred by- Mr K. Rutledge, who leased her to Johnson. She is trained at Templeton by R. W. Stockdale.

Dryden Pal paced a useful race for second, ahead of Finesse and the favourite, Mon Arnie, which came home well from an awkward position.

The favourite, Country John, a three-year-old by Johnny Globe from Circlette, gained an overdue first win for Mrs D. D. Nyhan when he beat Boston Billy by a length in the First Sefton Handicap. The Black Tulip-

Country John on-course double paid £42 8s for £l.

There was merit in Country John’s win as he was slow away. However, over the final stages of the race he gave none of the others much chance.

Boston Billy lasted for second, half a length in front of Falincia, with Bacardi and Sam Scott close up next, ahead of Piccarangi. Convertor, a surprise win favourite, gave his many supporters little cause for concern in the Ohoka Handicap. He took charge with less than six furlongs left and won handily from Global King, Say Diana and Hey Boy. Highftre, raced on lease from Mr G. J. Morrison, of Dunedin, by his Templeton trainer, C. C. Devine, gained an impressive win in the Second Sefton Handicap. He took charge with less than a mile left and won with something in hand by three lengths from Copper Khan and Roydon Frost.

The favourite, Champagne, was one of the best beginners, but broke after two furlongs. Made Amends

Logan Count made amends for an unlucky defeat at Ashburton on June 6 when he won the Oxford Handicap. He was badly checked and sent

to a break with a furlong left at Ashburton.

Logan Count is raced on lease by his Greenpark trainer, E. A. Clark, whose brother, L. R. Clark, owns and trains the brilliant Mighty Chief. L. R. Clarke has driven Logan Count in his four wins. Logan Count was allowed time to become balanced on Saturday and he was well back early. He gradually improved and led the chase after War Scene on the home turn. It was inside the last furlong before he was in control, and at the finish he won easily. War Scene was unchallenged for second, finishing clear of a strong finisher in Remember When, with King’s Cord next.

Student appreciated the firmer footing at Rangiora than when he was placed twice at Nelson, and he gained a comfortable win in the Archer Memorial Handicap. He received the run of the race after leading early. He challenged along the inside on reaching the straight and won by a length from Vandior, which was never far away. Newport Maid, last on settling down, came home well for third, ahead of Goldmount, which' had trouble securing a run, and Winfield Chief showed speed after starting from 24 yards.
