BEARDSLEY’S DRAWINGS Exhibition In London (Special Crspdt. N.Z.P.AJ LONDON, June 2. An exhibition of Aubrey Beardsley’s original drawings and paintings is attracting large crowds at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum. Beardsley, the most-sought illustrator of his day, was one of a close-knit group of artists and writers who worked together during the 1900 s. He combined formal design with wit to produce some of the best-known illustrations ever published. Working with artists such as Walter Sickert and William Rothenstein, and writers like Oscar Wilde, Henry James, and Max Beerbohm, Beardsley was largely responsible for the success of “The Yellow Book”—a periodical Containing work of the major poets and writers of his-time. He designed the wrappers for “Le Morte d’Arthur,” by Sir Thomas Mallory, and Alexander Pope’s “Rape Of The Lock.” He illustrated the “Pall Mall Magazine” and “The World Of Edgar Allen Pov” He wrote and illustrated himself “The Story Of Venus And Tannhauser." So popular was his work, that after Beardsley’s death many fake “Beardsleys” appeared on the market. These are also on view in the museum.
