Renata Has Easy Trials Win
Renata and Cardinal King, rivals in tne New Zealand Sapling Stakes at Ashburton tomorrow, won their respective heats of the two-year-old parade at trials yesterday at Addington Raceway.
Both horses won handily, particularly Renata, which paced the 10 furlongs more than five seconds faster than Cardinal King.
Renata led from end to end in her heat and won by four lengths from Athentic, which had every chance. Keilway Bay was a close third, clear of Hi Diamond.
Renata paced the 10 furlongs in 2min 44 4-ssec, the last half-mile in Imin 2sec, and the final quarter in 30sec. It was a sound trial for the Ashburton classic.
Cardinal King improved sharply in the middle stages and took control in the second heat. He finished solidly and won by half a length from Frostibon, with Pro Consul a fair third, ahead of Alandria, with Arkle and Newport Boy following. Cardinal King will only have to begin smoothly to be a place prospect at Ashburton. He took 2min 50sec for the 10 furlongs, the last halfmile in Imin 4 2-ssec, and the final quarter in 31 l-ssec. Disneyland, Mon Arnie, Okana and Braeburn did best of the horses engaged at Ashburton to compete in the 2min 20sec class pace. Okana won the first heat in 3min 38 4-5 sec, and Smokey Queen won the second in 3min 40 2-ssec. Gilt, Which failed to survive the ballot for the Sapling Stakes, recorded 3min 19 2-ssec When she won her heat of the qualifying trial in dashing style. It was a most impressive run and she finished 10 lengths in front of Trial Bay and Caught Again. The only other qualifier in three heats was Lanah,
