Tryout Favoured For Ashburton First Leg

Tryout and Lauder Way form a likely combination for the T.A.B. double on the first day of the Ashburton Trotting Club’s winter meeting tomorrow.

This double will be run on the Durbar Handicap, over two miles, and the Harvest Handicap, over 12 furlongs.

Tryout was a shade disappointing when he finished second to Friendly Tom over 10 furlongs at Addington Raceway last Saturday. The extra distance and his return to grass track racing could help him make amends. The Hal Tryax four-year-old is obviously a sound stayer. He will be bracketed with Hal’s Delight and Raven Song, the latter requiring one scratching to re-enter the field. Most of the others on the limit have little worth-while recent form to recommend them and the Addington winner, Our Smokey, and Why Not may be the best of them. Most of the limit horses should be held quite safely by some of their rivals on 36 yards. Admire and Allakasam, which will be bracketed with Alpine Lady, are two with strong form backgrounds, and the chances of Throwaway, Third Chief and Ulove cannot be overlooked. Lauder Way was narrowly beaten by Overtime at Oamaru two starts ago and last time out overcame a poor run after a slow start to finish eighth at Washdyke. Lauder Way is bred to be good in winter going, being by Stormyway from Lauder Lass. The track at Ashburton might not be very heavy,

but will at least have the sting out of it and that will suit Lauder Way. Vantage missed out at Addington Raceway last week when favourite for the twomile probationary drivers’ race. ‘He did well to finish seventh and should do better in this race.
