(New Zealand Press Association)
WELLINGTON, June 2.
The Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) told Parliament today that the New Zealand Government was prepared to deal with a government constituted according to the freely expressed wishes of the South Vietnamese people—whatever the government was.
Asked by Dr. A. M. Finlay (Opp. Waitakere) what would happen if Ky refused to hand over power to an elected government, Mr Holyoake said: “The Government would deal with the constitutional government of Vietnam.”
Dr. Finlay: How could the Government deal with a South Vietnamese government prevented from taking office? Mr Holyoake: The member knows the questions cannot be answered.
The Leader of the Opposition (Mr Kirk): Would the Government support the proposal that elections in South Vietnam be held in the presence of United Nation’s observers or under the United Nations?
Mr Holyoake: “I would say yes but whether this is a practical proposition I do not know.
