UNMARRIED MOTHERS
Fewer Seeking Help
Fewer unmarried mothers had sought the help of welfare organisations in Christchurch recently, the suiperintendant of the Presbyterian Social Services’ Association (the Rev. G. F. McKenzie) said yesterday. Several organisations had noted the decrease, although it was known that the number of unmarried mothers had not lessened.
More private homes were offering keep to such mothers. In most of those the mothers received keep in exchange for domestic duties. Although many homes were good, the association’s case workers would be happier if more mothers used the association’s services, Mr McKenzie said.
The association had several homes offering accommoda-
tion to unmarried mothers, and they were not being fully used at present.
