Letter Still An “Ultimatum”

WELLINGTON, June 2. There is no change in the attitude of the Federation of Labour to the letter written by the Minister of Works (Mr Allen) on wage rates for Tongariro.
The secretary of the F.O.L. Mr K. M. Baxter, said tonight that calling a meeting of union representatives to consider reopening negotiations with the tenderers for the Tongariro power scheme did not mean that the F.O.L. had changed its attitude to the dispute in any way. “So far as we are concerned the letter Mr Allen wrote was still an ultimatum, and Mr Holyoake on April 21 admitted that it was,” he said. “The meeting will consider
the question of reopening negotiations with the Italian firm, Codelfa-Codega, on a composite agreement and a • contract of employment with i the firm. “Notice of the meeting has I been sent to the 17 unions I concerned.” The dispute arose about six weeks ago when the Minister I of Works (Mr Allen) sent a i letter to the F.O.L. laying ■ down wage ceilings for the • project, as those in force at the time on the Manapouri • power scheme.
