WEEK-END DRIVING

Warning To Motorists

Heavy traffic was expected on main roads during the week-end and all drivers should take particular care, said the chief traffic officer of the Transport Department at Christchurch (Mr E. Wilson). The busiest day was expected to be Monday, when traffic returning to the city after the holiday weekend would combine with traffic from race meetings and other sporting events. The busiest road would probably be the Main South road, as there were race meetings at Ashburton on both Saturday and Monday. In the winter conditions drivers would have to exercise greater care in cornering, braking, and the distance they followed behind other vehicles, Mr Wilson said. Persons driving in lines of traffic were asked in particular to be patient and to keep a reasonable distance from the car in front.

Persons driving at night were asked to make sure they put their headlights on early in the evening, and also to make sure that their headlights were correctly adjusted, particularly if the vehicle was carrying a heavy load, which would tend to make the front of it rise. Motorists were also asked to dip their lights in good time to avoid dazzling approaching traffic or vehicles they were approaching from behind. “All drivers should keep a close watch for cyclists and pedestrians in the conditions of poor visibility that can be expected,” Mr Wilson said.
