POLICY ON DIVORCE

Mothers’ Union May Change The Mothers’ Union is considering a change in its policy on divorce. This is reported by the Rev. M. Underhill, vicar of St. Barnabas’s Church, Fendalton, to the latest issue of the parish magazine. “And about time too,” Mr Underhill adds. “If this change is not acceptable to the Mothers’ Union in England, the New Zealand Mothers’ Union might become independent and have ‘dominion status’ like our Parliament and Rugby football. “The suggested change is that no-one who is admitted to Holy Communion should be refused membership of the Mothers* Union. “At present the theory is that a divorcer or divorcee is excommunicated, but that they may be admitted back to Communion when the bishop has been consulted and has given his permission," Mr Underhill says. When the subject was referred to her in Hamilton last evening, the Dominion president of the Mothers’ Union (Mrs J. T. Holland), who is the wife of the Bishop of Waikato, refused to comment
