LEGAL AID SCHEME

Negotiations Near End (Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, June 2. A scheme to provide free or subsidised legal aid in civil cases is nearing completion after two years of negotiations between the Justice Department and the Law Society. The scheme is expected to protect plaintiffs as well as defendants.

Another subject for discussion between the AttorneyGeneral (Mr Hanan) and the Law Society is the possibility of renaming the Supreme Court, possibly with the English term “High Court.” Mr Hanan has suggested that “Supreme Court” is a misnomer, because the Court is not supreme.

If a change is agreed the Court of Appeal might be renamed the Supreme Court.
