Gifts Of Food For Kaitawa Widows

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, June 1

Fifty-eight cartons of groceries, the gift of Auckland housewives to the widows of the men lost on the Kaitawa, were delivered today to the Flying Angel Mission to Seamen.

Hundreds of housewives had each supplied two grocery items. Mrs J. V. Parker, of Epsom, began the collection by telephoning 50 of her friends and asking each of them to supply two items of groceries and ask two of their friends to help. The groceries will be distributed by members of the Seamen’s Wives’ Association. Auckland contributions to the fund for the dependants of the crew are now nearly £15,000. SEARCH BEGINS

H.M.N.Z.S. Kiama began the search for the wreck of the Kaitawa today by laying three marker beacons in the area and taking echo-sound-ings.

She will be joined tomorrow by the frigate Taranaki, the fisheries patrol ship Inverell, and the Marine Department’s fishing trawler W. J. Scott. The Taranaki and W. J. Scott sailed from Auckland today. The Inverell will sail early tomorrow morning. Fine weather is forecast for the first days of the search, which could take a week or more.

LIFE JACKETS FOUND Two life jackets from the Kaitawa were recovered from

Te Waiawa Bay, in the Scott’s Point area, by searchers today.

The life jackets were labelled “cook” and “crew orderly.”
