Judgment For £8162
Judgment for £8162 was entered by Mr Justice Wilson in the Supreme Court yesterday in favour of John Richard McDonald, a Westport carpenter (Mr A. Hearn), who was awarded the sum by a jury in Greymouth recently when he sought damages for injury suffered when he fell from a joist while helping to build the new Franz Josef Glacier hotel. Judgment had been deferred pending the outcome of a motion for a new trial, but this was dismissed yesterday, on the application of Mr K. J. McMenamin. Appeal Dismissed An appeal by Peter Dearden Meares, aged 18, a jewellery worker (Mr M. G. L. Loughnan) against detention in a detention centre for the theft of money from a defective stamp machine, was dismissed. Discipline was warranted in Meares’s case, said his Honour.
