Road Deaths Rising Rapidly

(N Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 1. The official total of road deaths this year was given as 193 by the Transport Department today, but many fatalties have since occured. By June last year the road toll was 246. Fifty-six lives were lost on the roads last month—the same figure as for May, 1965. Dustman Killed A dustman was killed when a rubbish truck ran over him at Marewa, a Napier suburb, this morning. He was Frank Baines, aged 50, married, of 20 Wyatt avenue, Napier. He was emptying a tin on to the back of the truck when the driver heard a knock signalling him to go. The truck reversed and ran over him. He was dead on arrival at the hospital.

Japanese Seaman A Japanese seaman died in an ambulance on the way to the Tauranga Public Hospital after being knocked down and emshed by the rear wheels of a 24-ton log-handling machine at the Mount Maunganui wharf yesterday. He was Suekichi Kato, aged 21, single. The log handling machine was reversing from the side of the Japanese ship Kaisei Mani, of which the dead man was a crew member, when the accident occurred. The ship’s agents said the body would be cremated in Rotorua and the ashes taken home on the ship when she sails tomorrow. Drowned In Zambia A Waimate man has been drowned at Livingstone, Zambia, while on an overseas trip. He was David Oscar Englebrecht, aged 40, a farmer, of Hook.

Body Identified

A man whose body was found in the lighter basin, Quay street, Auckland, by frogmen on Tuesday was identified today. He was William Flanders Taylor, aged 67, of Huntly avenue, Mount Eden. Hit By Car A 78-year-old widow, died in Green Lane Hospital this afternoon from injuries received when she was hit by a car in Mt Albert earlier in the day. She was Josephine Elizabe h Johnson, of Masonic Village, Queenstown road, Onehunga. Fell In Vat A man was taken to Auckland Hospital after he fell into a vat of caustic solution at a New Lynn factory at noon today.

He is Mr R. Sanderson, an employee of an electrical contractor at the factory.. Workmates pulled him out of the vat and put him into a of water.

Still Missing

The police are still searching for a Kaikoura man who has been missing from his home in Beach road since Sunday night. He is John Joseph Crowe, a bridge inspector with the New Zealand Railways. He was wearing slippers and a dressing gown when he disappeared. Girl Killed

An 11-year-old girl died in the Dargaville Hospital late this afternoon from injuries received in a road accident yesterday. She was Valerie Rope, daughter of Mr and Mrs E. C. Rope, Te Kopuru. She was knocked from her bicycle in a collision with a truck at Te Kopuru. Head Injuries A man died today in Middlemore Hospital from head injuries received in an accident in Parnell road on Saturday. He was Richard Kenneth Atutahi, aged 21, of 5 Martin
