STOPPED SHOW

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) LONDON, June 1.

The soprano, Joan Sutherland, “stopped the show” during a rehearsal for “La Fille du Regiment” at London’s Covent Garden Opera House yesterday. Near the end of the opera the Duchess of Crackentorp, played by Edith Coates, has a grand entry to a waltz tune. Miss Sutherland had discovered that it was Miss Coates’s birthday and secretly persuaded the orchestra to substitute “Happy Birthday To You.” The effect was so unexpected that it stopped the show.
