INVERCARGILL, June 1. New Zealand’s investment in agricultural research was pitifully low, Mr A. R. Rankin, the Department of Agriculture's field superintendent in Southland, told the annual conference of the Dominion Agriculture Section of Federated Farmers today. “Research work is the key to greater efficiency in the industry.” he said. Improved efficiency was the fanners' main hope for maintaining reasonable profits in the face of steeply rising costs. “To me, your future would appear to be much better served by increased encouragement of research rather than increased encouragement for capital expenditure on farms.”
New Zealand spent 0.3 per cent of the gross national product on research. This compared with Ghana's 0.2 per cent, Australia’s 0.6 per cent, Canada’s 12 per cent, and the United States’s 2.8 per cent
