British Team Goes To Rhodesia

(N.Z.P.A. Reuter —Copyright)

LONDON, June 1.

A tea ii of top British Government officials left London by air for Salisbury last night to resume exploratory talks on the Rhodesia crisis.

The talks, started in London eafty last month, are aimed at finding a basis for a negotiated settlement of the six-month-old Rhodesian independence issue.

Zambia has condemned the

talks as likely to lead to a ‘•sell-out” of Rhodesia’s African majority. The secrecy-shrouded discussions were suspended 10 days ago while the Rhodesian officials returned to Salisbury to report to Mr lan Smith, leader of Rhodesia’s breakaway regime. A Commonwealth Relations Office spokesman said it was not known how long the British officials would remain in Salisbury. In Dar-es-Salaam, the United Nations Colonialism Committee tonight approved a resolution urging Britain to use force to overthrow the Rhodesian regime of Mr Smith, and asking the Security Council to impose mandatory sanctions against Rhodesia.

Australia voted against the resolution. The United States, Italy, and Denmark abstained.
