Art Body Overruled

Many cases in which recommendations of Britain's Royal Fine Art Commission have been overruled have concerned damage to natural beauty, or the countryside, through the activities of Government departments or nationalised industries, “The Times” reported. In their report for 19621965, published this month, the commissioners say: “We think it not unfair to say that for some years there has been a presumption that where (as is always the case) the alternative to avoiding important damage to natural beauty involves some degree of extra cost, it requires a superhuman effort to win the battle.

“This is surely a most short-sighted policy, for, given the expansion of population which is now foreseen, unless there is a change of heart, in a fairly short space of time the inhabitants of large parts of England will have to make long journeys before they see any real country. The loss in terms of human happiness and content will be incalculable.”

The emphasis and character of the commission’s work has changed and new problems arise from large-scale rebuilding and replanning activities.
