Tennis Champion’s Long Match

(N.Z.P.A. Reuter—Copyright) PARIS. The defending champion, F. Stolle, of Australia, was given a scare before beating the Dutch number 1, T. Okker, in five sets at the French tennis championships on Saturday.

Stolle, the top seed, looked tense and nervous as he conceded the first two sets to the 22-year-old Dutchman, Europe’s greatest tennis prospect, who is on leave from national service in the army. But the lanky Australian took hold of himself and the match in the third set, and went on to win 2-6, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2, 6-1, to reach the quarter finals.

Okker played brilliantly for two sets, serving to a perfect length, picking up Stolle’s booming service confidently and passing the Australian as he tried to bore in to the net.

The turning point came at 2-2 in the third set. Stolle was 15-40 down on his own service but dug himself out of this situation and suddenly found his confidence. From then on, Stolle did not allow the Dutchman to gain control again.

Two unseeded players, I. Gulyas (Hungary) and K. Fletcher (Australia), qualified to meet in one of the men’s quarter finals. Results of singles:— MEN'S SINGLES Third Round.—N. Spear (Jugoslavia) beat C. Richey (U.S.). 6-8. 7-5. 6-0, 6-0: F. Stolle (Aus-
