ONE of the most remarkable private-enterprise postal systems on record was that run by Giacomo Muzzi, a capable and energetic Italian who lived in Egypt a century ago.
To understand how he was able to make his fortune in a foreign land it is necessary to take a backward glance to the somewhat chaotic conditions prevailing in 19th-century Egypt There was no national post office at all until 1866, and the first public postal service, operated by an Italian, was started in 1820.
