FISHERMAN DROWNED
Timaru Roat Lost At Sea
(N.Z. Press Association) TIMARU, May 27. A young Timaru fisherman was drowned when a trawler,
the Ajax, sank about 10 miles off the Pukeuri coast, north of Oamaru, today. He was James William Odey, aged about 22. Another man aboard the trawler, Edward Brown, also aged about 22, survived. He was picked up from a life raft by another Timaru fishing vessel in the area not long after the sinking. The search for the dead man's body will be continued during the week-end. Chief Inspector E. J. Trappitt, officer in charge of the Timaru police district, announced this evening. “We have asked shipping and aircraft passing the area to maintain a lookout,” said Mr Trappitt. The Ajax, which normally carried a crew of two, was
owned by Mr J. Odey, sen. Mr Brown said that at 4 a m. the Ajax, heavy with its catch of fish, began to settle bv the stern. He and Mr Odey attempted to save the vessel by tossing the catch overboard, but the Ajax sank rapidly.
