PIG KILL DROP

Meat Shortage Feared

“New Zealand will have to look elsewhere for pig meat if the rate of the pig kill continues to drop,” said Mr R. Davis, chairman of the National Pig Council, in an address to the Canterbury District Pig Committee. “As the demand for pig meat has increased, pig producers have expressed concern at the decline caused by the increase in tanker collection of milk. “An alternative means of producing pig meat must be found, and in some areas this could be done by meal feeding,” said Mr Davis. “More specialised farms are needed with a smaller staff of more qualified people. More qualified workers should also be employed on the administrative side to maintain an efficient body.” Mr Davis said that the boar testing station at Korokonui had been very successful and the pig industry had benefited from its establishment. Additional pens would soon be built and there was room for more boars from breeders. Committee members elected were: Messrs G. Barwell, D. Hurford, F. W. Hansen, S. Myers and R. Skilling.
