New Brighton Residents Object To Car Park

A petition by 19 New Brighton residents objecting to the establishment of an off-street car park between Mafeking street and Union street was presented to the Citv Council yesterday. The residents object to the car park for the following reasons:—

(a) “the likelihood of the properties near the car park being diminished in value.

(b) “the noise and nuisance which would result from motor vehicles using the car park at all hours of the day and night (c) “the likelihood of the car parking area becoming a base for young persons to in-

dulge in hooliganism, as occurs every now and again in the present parking areas in New Brighton.

(d) “the increased traffic which would result, in both Mafeking street and Union street, would be likely to cause difficulties, particularly in Mafeking street which is a sub-width street.

(e) “the danger that is likely to arise for the children of residents in the area concerned. We are instructed that there are more than 12 children in the area up to the age of 12. (f) “the probability that the parking area would become a dump for rubbish which would again cause a nuisance to nearby residents.” Mr J. A. Nuttall, a spokes-1 man for the residents, said | that every person, except one.) who lived on the . streets surrounding the car park I had signed the petition. The| streets were Union. Beresford and Mafeking streets. “Rather than mutilate a residential area, more thought should be given to the extension of parking along the New Brighton foreshore.” said Mr Nuttall. “Parking was promised years ago by extending these areas. This would benefit the whole of Christchurch and not just the few people who wish to park close to the shops on a Saturday.” Mr Nuttall said that the biggest danger in using the area as a car park would be the build-up of traffic that would result in Mafeking street, Beresford street and back into Oram avenue. At present there was a width of only 9ft between two parked cars in Mafeking street. When cars were waiting to get into the car park nothing would be able to get through. If there was a fire or sick person the results could be tragic.
