Emergency Benefit
Sir, —1 was shocked to find that wives of prisoners have to suffer humiliation by having to report weekly to the Social Security Department. Surely these declarations for emergency benefit could be witnessed by a postmaster, minister of religion, or justice of the peace, and then sent on to the Social Security Department, as the department already knows these people’s financial position. Bus fares into town are also a hardship, and these women also often have to take young children on a journey that I feel could be avoided.— Yours, etc., DISILLUSIONED NATIONALIST. May 19, 1966.
[The district registrar of the Social Security Department (Mr E. B. Pyne) says: “Women whose husbands are detained in prisons are not required to report weekly to the department. Any income declarations required may be witnessed by a postmaster or other authorised person and sent in by post.”]
