Ferry Road Traffic
Sir, —I wish to draw attention to an illegal and dangerous practice by motorists driving south down Ferry road, from the traffic lights at the junction with Moorhouse avenue. These people usually take the left-hand lane and very frequently overtake other cars on their left—often as far as or beyond Olliviers road. On one occasion a car passed me at the last petrol station before the tunnel roundabout having treated all other cars in the same way (as my rear-vision mirror showed). The other evening a large yellow van forged past me on my left, and long after the lanes had ended he pulled out to pass a parked lorry. This forced me well over the centre line, in the face of heavy oncoming traffic. I am by no means a lone sufferer from these dangerous and selfish drivers, as I have heard many complaints. Now, before the inevitable smash occurs, would it not be wise to have an inspector to watch and check these hare-brained people?—Yours, etc., E.D.P. May 8, 1966. [The traffic superintendent of the Christchurch City Council (Mr J. F. Thomas) says: “Officers detailed for duty in this area will be acquainted with the correspondent’s observations, and will look for the type of driving complained of.”]
