Australia Out Of Tennis Cup
(N.Z.P.A. Reuter—Copyright) TURIN. Australia, the holder, was knocked out of the Federation Cup, the women’s world team tennis competition, by Western Germany, in the semi-finals yesterday.
Western Germany took a 2-0 winning lead by winning both singles. Miss E. Buding beat the Australian first string, Miss J. Tegart, 8-10, 6-4, 6-2, and Miss Niessen beat Miss K. Krantzcke, 6-3, 6-3. Australia, with its leading players, Misses M. Smith and L. Turner absent through injury and illness, did well to reach the semi-finals, said the captain-manager, Mr C. Sproule. Australia later salvaged the doubles when Miss Tegart and Miss Krantzcke beat Misses Buding and Niessen, 6-2, 2-6, 6-0. This made the final result 2-1 to Western Germany. In the other semi-final, the United States beat Britain 2-1. Scores:
Miss J. Heldman (U.S.) beat Miss W. Shaw, 64, 5-7, 6-3, Mrs A. Haydon Jones (Britain) beat Mrs B. J. King, 6-1, 64. Mrs King and Mrs Graebner beat Mrs Jones and Miss E. Starkie, 4-6, 6-3, 6-0.
