SOCCER FINAL

Down 0-2, Won 3-2 (N Z P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) LONDON. Everton won the English F.A. Cup at Wembley on Saturday, beating Sheffield Wednesday, 3-2, in the final. Everton's victory completed a great cup and league double for the Merseyside—its neighbour, Liverpool, won this season’s league first division championship. A capacity crowd of 100,000 watched one of the most exciting matches in the long history of the cup competition.

Sheffield Wednesday outplayed Everton in the early stages of the final, and only when it was trailing 0-2 after 57 minutes did Everton find its touch. Then it fought back and won the lead with two goals by the 19-year-old M. Trebilcock, who was brought into the side at the last minute instead of the England World Cup forward, F. Pickering, and one by the England international, D. Temple. The three Everton goals were scored within 17 minutes.

Wednesday’s opening goal came in the fourth minute, by j. McCalliog, and it was the first goal scored against Everton in this season’s cup competition. Sheffield went further ahead in the 57th minute when the inside-left, D. Ford, fired a shot past the Everton goal-keeper, G. West, from a rebound.
