Junior Red Cross Activities

Junior Red Cross members and organisers have taken part in an increasing number of activities during the year and have undertaken ambitious projects, both in New Zealand and abroad.

Juniors have continued to assist hospitals and provide gifts, have staffed a creche,

and have organised concert parties, says the annual report. Many individual visits have been made to senior citizens’ homes, and juniors have given practical help with household chores, doing weekly shopping and weeding gardens. The meals-on-wheels service is continually expanding. In one town high school members took over the entire service for the three-week August holidays. High-school members have also taken an interest in handicapped children, helping in homes and teaching handicrafts. Many Ingenious methods have been used to raise funds including pet parades, shoe cleaning, a sale of shoe laces, caring for pets, and cleaning water tanks.

Refugees, patients suffering from leprosy, displaced persons, victims of disasters and the underprivileged in many countries have benefitted from Junior Red Cross aid. More than £3OOO has been sent overseas in grants, and eight individual adoptions arranged. More than £220 has been raised for local relief.
