Advertising
Sir, —With a disregard for accuracy which is typical of much of the commercial advertising inflicted upon us, the president of the Association of New Zealand Advertisers (“The Press,” May 14) attempts to play down the cost of the practices criticised at the Labour Party conference. It is not only supporters of that party who are becoming increasingly aware of the wastage and high cost in manpower and other resources which attends much commercial advertising and related sales - promotion gimmicks. How sound is an economy in which full employment is attained, often at the cost of production, by having large numbers of workers engaged in activities of extremely dubious economic and social value and ranging from the frivolous to the parasitic? Where is it now possible to purchase the weekly supply of groceries, petrol and innumerable other goods without also paying a heavy toll loaded onto the legitimate price by the sales-promotion fraternity.—Yours, etc.
E. R. HUDSON. May 15, 1966.
