WOOL PIECE GOODS
Lower Imports Deplored
“This lack of co-operation by the Government with the grower and buyer alike can only lead to a sense of frustration within the industry,” said the chairman, Mr W. N. Dunlop, in his address to the annual conference of the meat and wool section of North Canterbury Federated Farmers.
He was referring to the Government’s action in reducing the importation of woollen piece goods from 3m square yards to 2m square yards at almost the same time as the International Wool Secretariat’s Woolmark symbol was introduced in New Zealand for quality goods containing virgin wool.
“I believe the general public is not aware of just how savage have been these reductions over the last decade —1955, 7m square yards: 1957, 5.4 m square yards: 1960, 4m square yards: 1964, 3m square yards and now 2m. This, when the New Zealand growers are levying themselves £3m a year to promote wool, can only be of benefit to our competitors, the synthetic manufacturers.”
