May 14 SWANS.—It seems that the swans, both white and black, have permanently deserted the Avon, and found their way to the southern part of the province. The “Timaru Herald,” of Friday last, says:—“A report has reached us, which we have every reason to believe is correct, that the swans which recently disappeared from Christchurch are now in this neighbourhood. The white swans were seen a few days since on the lagoon near the mouth of the Opihi, and we believe were cruelly fired at by some persons who were out shooting. Two black swans were also seen upon the Washdvke lagoon, close to Timaru, but they only remained there about a day, and flew away south in the direction of the large lagoons south of the Otaio. We trust the notice we give of the
presence of these birds in our neighbourhood will deter any person from shooting them; for any person so offending may be seriously dealt with. It is generally believed that the black swans will remain in the south, as the lagoons there are large and numerous, and the birds can there breed without interruption.” THE STEEPLECHASE.—The sites for booths at the forthcoming steeplechase on the Queen’s birthday were sold by auction by Mr. Barnard, on Saturday. They were two in number and situated under a grand stand, which is to be erected, with a further right of putting up two booths should more accommodation be required. The sites realised £4l 10s, a very fair price we should imagine, when it is considered that there will be only one day's sport.
