This was Her Pal’s second win in five starts from the Murfitt stable at Islington. Her first was at the Canterbury Jockey Club's autumn meeting. Marand was a tiring fourth in a gap of two lengths. An Easy Wlaaer Lady Wild, an easy winner at Awapuni at her previous start, led for the last seven furlongs In the Strathmore Handicap. Her only challenger was Cephas, which, after leading early, trailed on the Inside after Lady Wild ran clear.

Golden Bebel, the favourite, was a length back fourth. He was unable to quicken after getting the run of the race. Tsunami, the South Island’s only runner, made Httle impression, finishing seventn.
